Mitrano: Reed’s failure to stand up for military personnel is “reprehensible”

PENN YAN—Democrat Tracy Mitrano had heated words for her opponent during her weekly press call Thursday, condemning Rep. Tom Reed’s excuses for the president’s inaction on reports that Russia pays Taliban fighters to kill US soldiers in Afghanistan.

For Mitrano, it’s personal: A family member recently spent a year in service there.

The Olean Times-Herald reports that during his press call Tuesday, Reed (R-NY23) declared, “My top priority is always the safety of our men and women in uniform,” and if the reports are true, Russia should be held accountable. But he wouldn’t hold President Trump accountable, saying only, “We don’t want to rush to judgement.”

“Tom Reed does not stand up for men and women in uniform in Afghanistan,” said Mitrano. “The president is unwilling to hear, learn, understand and act on intelligence that the Russians are paying bounties for members of our troops, and Tom Reed makes excuses for it” rather than doing his job, she said.

“They have both abandoned their posts,” Mitrano said later. “It is a reprehensible abandonment of our district’s many veterans and military families, especially going into this July Fourth weekend.”

Tragically, there’s already an investigation into an incident involving two New Yorkers. Three Marines were killed in an attack in Afghanistan last April, months after the White House first reportedly learned of the bounties. One was a decorated New York City firefighter with two children. Another was from Long Island.

“Their parents are calling for answers, and we all should,” Mitrano said. “Before Tom Reed gives Donald Trump another pass, he needs to understand that Trump’s inaction to date, and his own failure to act now, is endangering lives. He does not appreciate the values of the people of this district.”

Mitrano pointed out that military service is one of the few economic opportunities available to many young people in New York’s 23rd district. “The idea that this representative does not stand up for the men and women in this district who put their lives at risk because he can't utter a word against the president is reprehensible.”

Trump, she said, “is incapable of accepting responsibility for anything. Politics is not entertainment. It is about life and death. We have entrusted this beautiful country and these beautiful young people to this kind of representation. It must stop with this election on November 3.”
